Details
Polyoxymethylene (POM)
As a type of synthetic resin, it is also known as polyoxymethylene resin, POM plastic, and acetal copolymer. It features high hardness, high rigidity, and excellent wear resistance. It is mainly used to manufacture load-bearing structural components such as gears, bearings, auto parts, as well as internal components of machine tools and instruments.
Product Features
- POM does not require drying before processing, but preheating (around 80°C) during the processing is recommended, which is beneficial to the dimensional stability of the final products.
- POM has a narrow processing temperature range (0~215°C). If it stays in the barrel for too long or the temperature exceeds 220°C, it will decompose and produce highly irritating formaldehyde gas.
- A relatively high holding pressure (close to the injection pressure) is required during POM injection molding to reduce pressure drop. The screw speed should not be too high, and the residual material should be minimized.
- POM products have high shrinkage rates, which tend to cause sink marks or deformation.
- POM is suitable for molding under the conditions of medium pressure, medium speed, low material temperature, and relatively high mold temperature. Mold temperature control is necessary for precision product molding.
- It has high mechanical strength and rigidity.
- It offers the highest fatigue strength among comparable engineering plastics.
- It has good environmental resistance and excellent organic solvent resistance.
- It features strong repeated impact resistance, good electrical properties, excellent resilience, inherent self-lubrication, superior wear resistance, and outstanding dimensional stability.
Applications
POM can replace most non-ferrous metals and is widely used in manufacturing auto parts, internal components of machine tools and instruments, bearings, fasteners, gears, spring washers, pipes, conveyor belt accessories, electric rice cookers, pump casings, drainers, and faucets.
